Question for Fellow Vegans

How do you guys deal with white sugar? I feel like eating-out vegan is possible, but white sugar is hidden in a lot of places. I need advice!

  1. I’ve got such a sweet tooth, so this is a toughie! Still, I’ve dramatically cut down on white sugar by using dates in a lot of things. I first learned about this at a cooking class I took where the instructor made chocolate mousse out of avocados, cocoa, fresh orange juice and dates. I thought it was going to be terrible, but it was delicious! I have the recipe posted on my blog if you want to check it out: http://honkifyourevegan.com/2013/03/22/dairy-free-orange-chocolate-pudding/. I have since experimented with using dates and sometimes bananas in other recipes and you can make a lot of yummy stuff that way. I must admit that I haven’t completely given up on sugar, but dates have helped me to cut down dramatically. I also have a recipe for really yummy hot chocolate that uses dates. Here’s that recipe: http://honkifyourevegan.com/2013/06/13/i-cant-believe-its-healthy-hot-chocolate-2/. Good luck! Oh, and I love your blog by the way. Celeste 🙂

    • Thank you! And thank you for the tips! Dates have become a huge part of my life since the vegetarian/vegan transition…a bigger part than I ever imagined dates would be in my life. Haha.

      • I know – aren’t dates great! I don’t even know that I ever ate dates before going vegan. I’m sure I must have, but very rarely. Celeste 🙂
